No animals in compost

published: March 01 2006 12:00 AM updated:: March 01 2006 12:00 AM
news@theheraldnewspapers.com Following up on our story that the Herald broke in Monday’s edition of animals being used in composts at the Sevier County Waste Facility, the state says that a Tennessee regulation was violated. A special waste permit is needed for the Humane Society to turn over dead animals for compost at the county landfill. The state says that permit was not on file. The Humane Society has been taking animals to Sevier County Waste Management Inc. because the shelter cannot afford to maintain the expensive incinerator that was used to dispose of animals. No fines were issued in this case but the Sevier County Humane Society must file for the right permit. After the new permit is obtained, Sevier County Waste Management Inc. will no longer to able to use the animals in the compost.
