FBI searches for Knoxville bank robber The FBI and Knoxville Police Department are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the person who robbed the BB&T in Knoxville yesterday. The BB&T at 310 Merchants Drive, in Knoxville, Tennessee, was the victim of a bank robbery today. Witnesses report that at approximately 11:04 Monday, a white male, approximately 50 years old, 5’8” to 6’0” tall, medium build, with a gray mustache, who was wearing eyeglasses, a red/orange Nascar cap, a tan colored jacket with a dark collar, blue jeans, and who brandished a silver/gray semi-automatic pistol, approached a teller and demanded money. After taking an undetermined amount of money, the robber left. He was last seen by witnesses driving eastbound on Merchants drive in a silver, late 90’s model Chevrolet Malibu with out-of-state tags, which included the letters and numbers “95K”. Anyone having any information concerning this robbery should call the FBI at 544-0751 or the Knoxville Police Department’s Hotline at 215-7212. UT announces alumni summer college program The University of Tennessee National Alumni Association will welcome alumni and friends back to campus this July 12-16 for its annual Alumni Summer College.Alumni Summer College provides alumni and community members an opportunity to attend lectures and special functions on campus for a week. Faculty, staff and other experts will speak on topics related to this year’s “Frontiers” theme.Attendees will hear presentations on topics ranging from cutting edge trends in bio-terrorism and medical ethics to cyber-advances and progressive law enforcement training.Anyone interested may participate in the Summer College -- it is not necessary to be a UT alumnus. Three ORNL scientists honored Three Oak Ridge National Laboratory researchers have been honored as Battelle Distinguished Inventors for obtaining 14 or more patents during their careers at the laboratory. The honorees are: - John Hsu with 15 patents that deal primarily with electric motors and their associated components and drive packages, energy conversion machines and thermal management of vehicle systems and components. - Stephen Smith with 14 patents related to pulse transmission and receiving, monitoring of fluid pressures and flow abnormalities in gasses, monitoring machine performance and performing spectral analysis on alternating currents in motors. - Arthur “Artie” Moorhead with 14 patents relating to processes for fabricating, joining and strengthening ceramics and other materials. The honorees join an elite group of inventors recognized by Columbus, Ohio-based Battelle from the scientific ranks of its own labs and the federal labs it helps to manage. Battelle has bestowed the honor on 42 inventors, 18 of them from ORNL.
