Bredesen to kickoff TN’s first Sales Tax Holiday

Preview tour set for Wednesday, August 2, 2006 Governor Phil Bredesen will visit four counties on Wednesday, Aug. 2, to kickoff Tennessee’s first sales tax holiday. The actual holiday begins 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 4, and ends 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 6. Bredesen will make stops at retail outlets in Shelby, Hamilton, Washington and Knox counties. “Creating this sales tax holiday was one of my goals from the beginning of my administration,” Bredesen said. “The sales tax holiday positively impacts education, our number one priority and will provide tax savings for Tennessee’s working families as they prepare for the school year.” Governor Bredesen’s Schedule For Wednesday, August 2: 9 a.m. CDT – Shelby County Location: Target – 601 Colonial Road - Memphis 1 p.m. EDT - Hamilton County Location: Wal-Mart - 2020 Gunbarrel Road - Chattanooga 3 p.m. EDT - Washington County Location: K-Mart - 3019 Peoples Street - Johnson City 4:45 p.m. EDT - Knox County Location: Wal-Mart - 7420 Chapman Highway – Knoxville During this designated three-day weekend of the sales tax holiday, consumers may purchase selected clothing, school supplies and computers without paying Tennessee’s state and local sales tax on the items. The holiday also includes purchases of qualified items sold via mail, telephone, e-mail, or Internet if the customer orders and pays for the item and the retailer accepts the order during the exemption period for immediate shipment, even if delivery is made after the exemption period.
