Mountain Laurel Gallery reopens in the Candoro Marble Building

Mountain Laurel Gallery, long a mainstay of the Candy Factory has temporarily located in the historic Candoro Marble Building on Maryville Pike. Designed by Charles Barber and completed in 1922, the Beaux Arts structure is on the National Register of Historic Places.  The building was the showroom for the J.J. Craig Company, which cut and polished marble that was shipped all over the country.  Candoro Marble was used in the construction of the Smithsonian’s Museum of History and Technology, the AFL-CIO headquarters, the Austrian Chancery, and the National Gallery of Art, the largest marble building in the world. “The Mountain Laurel Gallery has made a happy fit into this striking interior,” said Sherby Jones, gallery operator, which features the works of local artists and craftsmen. The first Friday evenings of each month will feature an outdoor “Open Mic” performance beginning at 8:00 pm.  Performers and poets are encouraged to participate.  The gallery is open Friday through Sunday each weekend.
