SCHS’s Calkins semifinalists for Presidential Scholar

Twelve Tennessee students have been selected among the semifinalists in the annual Presidential Scholars award program. The Presidential Scholars program was founded in 1964 to recognize outstanding graduating high school seniors. Of the 550 semifinalists selected nationwide, up to 141 students will be chosen as 2006 Presidential Scholars. Students may qualify for the honor based on academic achievement or scholarship in the visual arts, performing arts or creative writing. “These students represent their schools and fellow seniors well by demonstrating academic excellence and the potential of young people,” Commissioner Lana Seivers said. “It is always an honor to help recognize the many achievements of students in Tennessee.” • High School Student City University School of Nashville, Brandon Berger, Nashville  • Sevier County High School, Anne Calkins, Sevierville • Houston High School, Robert Cameron, Germantown • Germantown High School, Emily Fifer, Germantown • St. Mary’s Episcopal School, Katie Friedman, Memphis • Oak Ridge High School, Andrew Jallouk, Oak Ridge • St. Mary’s Episcopal School, Laura Kaplan, Memphis  • The Culver Academies, Caitlin Meares, Culver • St. Mary’s Episcopal,  Ellen Page, Memphis • Hume Fogg High School, Thomas Stephens, Nashville  • Oak Ridge High School, William Terry, Oak Ridge • Houston High School,  Caitlin Thomas, Germantown  The 2006 Presidential Scholars will be announced in May and invited to Washington, D.C. in June for National Recognition Week. As guests of the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, awardees will meet with government officials, educators, authors, musicians, scientists and other accomplished leaders. The trip includes a ceremony at the White House where each scholar will receive a Presidential Scholar medallion.
