Dollar General is moving into the old Food City location at 8717 Chapman Hwy. but it won’t be just a Dollar General store. The new store will be a Dollar General Market.
Officials for the company have just recently confirmed that the new store will be a “Market” store, and construction is underway.
“I have a deadline set for Mid-March,” said Nashville resident Lenny Peak of Storecrafters, Inc. of Rochester, NY, a company that refits retail outlets. “It will be a Dollar General Superstore. They will have both food and retail here. There are three other superstores in the Knoxville area as far as I know.”
Peak said that freezers will line the south wall of the 30,000 sq. ft. store and food racks will be located along the back.
Peak identified himself as the foreman of the refurbishing project. He said that it is his crew’s job to strip out and refinish the store. “Inside, outside, fixtures, the whole nine yards.” Peak said he did not know for sure when the store would open.
Dollar General Stores are primarily located in communities of less than 25,000 people or in selected locations within larger metropolitan areas. Many of the company’s customers earn a small paycheck or depend on monthly government assistance and a considerable number are retired, according to the corporate website.
Dollar General Market added approximately 20 Dollar General Market stores in 2004. The Dollar General Market is a larger format store that offers an expanded selection of Dollar General’s core mix of consumable basic merchandise, apparel, seasonal merchandise, home entertainment items including DVDs, videos and magazines, as well as a selection of fresh produce and a broad assortment of refrigerated, frozen and non-perishable food items.
Dollar General stores operate more than 7,000 stores in 30 states. Stores are served by seven distribution centers in: Alachua, Florida; Scottsville, Kentucky; Indianola, Mississippi; Fulton, Missouri; Zanesville, Ohio; Ardmore, Oklahoma; and South Boston, Virginia. The company is headquartered in Goodletsville, TN.
