The suspect was caught about a mile away from the crime scene at the Knights Inn. One victim was found injured at the motel and police said the other victim fled the scene, but was later located. Their injuries were not threatening. No names were released at press time. UT hosts conference Global warming is a problem and students from across the southeast are here in Knoxville to fight the problem. Approximately 300 students from eight states are in the area to attend seminars and learn about renewable energy. Students are learning about how to create energy practices and policies that are expected to slow the global warming process. The conference is part of UT’s Environmental Semester, which hopes to teach UT students how to take care of the environment. Woman hospitalized A man tried to help police catch a suspected car thief and wound up causing a crash Friday. Knoxville police say 19-year-old Christopher Watts, posed as a potential car buyer stole a BMW from a car lot in Oak Ridge. Kevin Edwards, was driving a pick up truck and saw the chase and later spotted the stolen BMW in west Knoxville. Edwards tried to help police by chasing Watts in the BMW. TennCare cuts The state is asking an appeals court to forgo oral arguments and make a decision on whether a federal judge has the right to put on hold planned TennCare cuts. The request was filed with the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Lawyers for the state argue that Gov. Bredesen does not need court approval to cut TennCare rolls, in part because he answers to the voters instead of the district court. The appeals court is reviewing U.S. District Judge William Haynes’ decision to delay the governor’s planned TennCare cuts. Currently, the state has plans to cut 323,000 adults from TennCare and reduce benefits for many others. TVA reports leaks The radioactive material tritium leaked into a monitoring well at the Watts Bar Nuclear Plant during repair work on February 10, according to reports by TVA to state and federal officials. The tritium was from the plant’s reactor and from the operation at the plant near Spring City. This location is where the company is making tritium for the Department of Energy to be used in nuclear bombs. Tritium gives nuclear weapons their deadly blast. Dave McIntyre of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission stated that there was no off-site release and no threat to the public or TVA employees. Fire in Lonsdale Someone threw something through the window of a Lonsdale woman’s home causing the house to go up in flames. Firefighters arrived at the scene late Saturday evening. The woman says she ran to a neighbor’s house to call 911 because she thought someone was trying to break in. A short time later the home was on fire. Extensive damage was reported and according to reports, the home was not insured.
