Three Walters State student photographers have been chosen as finalists in the Photographer’s Forum 24th Annual Student Photography Contest, sponsored by Nikon USA.
Photographs taken by Sherry Keers, Autumn Roberts and Misty Walker were chosen from over 31,000 entries by undergraduate college students throughout America. Their selection as finalists places them in the top 5 percent of college photographers in the country. Their work will be published in the Best of College Photography Annual 2004.
John May, adjunct professor of photography at Walters State, said the work of each student is very different, but all three managed to connect with viewers in a very meaningful way.
“Sherry photographed very beautiful landscapes. Misty’s photograph is of her children and Autumn’s photograph featured her younger brother. What they share in common is that their photographs communicate and cause us to reflect,” May said.
May teaches at Walters State Community College two days a week and operates Classic Photography Studio in Greeneville during the rest of the week. He constantly looks for new ways to share both commercial and artistic techniques with his students.
“We go to art galleries and museums so that students see the work of the world’s great photographers. We see what other photographers are noticing and how they are communicating through their photographs,” he explained.
