Dollar General Stores, the retail outlet featuring low-cost consumables and operating more than 6,300 stores in 27 states is bringing their special mix of products and service to Seymour. The new store, which will be located at 11708 Chapman Highway, is already under construction; Subcontractors have laid the foundation and the walls and roof are currently being completed. “The information from our growth and development department is that we’ll be open in late spring or early summer,” said Andrea Turner, Media Relations Manager with the Dollar General corporate offices. The main factor in completion date will be sufficient clement weather. Typically the company employs between six and ten employees at a store of this size, which will stretch to just over 8,800 square feet of retail space. J. L. Turner started Dollar General Stores in Kentucky, with the benefit of only a third-grade education. It opened in 1955 on an experimental basis to sell no items above one dollar. The concept was very successful: in just a decade, Turner was operating 255 stores with annual sales of over $25 million.
