Students volunteer at local clinic
(This is part two of a five part series on the class.)
Everyday at 2:00 p.m. Jennifer Homerdig and Katie Williams leave their Sevier County High School campus and finish their day at The Mountain Hope Good Shepherd Clinic. The seniors are students of the Service Learning Class at the school and the curriculum requires them to volunteer time at specific agencies throughout the county.
“We got the girls shortly after school started in August and absolutely love having them here,” stated Elaine Miller, director of volunteers for the clinic.
“They accomplish so much in the time they are here, it really helps out.” Some of the duties and responsibilities the girls have are to pull medical charts, stuff envelopes, simple cleaning, some crafty projects and even answer telephones on occasion. They are always learning new skills that will help them in the future such as fundraiser budgeting and special event planning. “We appreciate everything they do, and want to teach them as much as possible in a variety of areas,” Miller continued.
Some tasks are age restrictive at the medical clinic, but Jennifer and Katie always are eager to attempt new duties. “I don’t mind doing anything that is asked of me,” said Homerdig, who always has a smile on her face. “Sweeping the parking lot was a bit tiring but it had to be done, so we did it!” The students signed up for the pilot class at the high school because it was new and appeared interesting.
“I never realized how many people need assistance,” claimed Homerdig. “It makes me feel good to do something where so many people will benefit.” One of the goals of the class is to promote awareness of the need for volunteers, which it apparently has. Both girls have thoughts of continuing on in their volunteer status.Jane Bishop, instructor of the class requires the students to keep a daily journal of activities performed while at their agency and once every three weeks the entire class re-groups for discussion and review. “I am very proud of the students as well as the program, and hope that other schools will be able to offer it in the future,” stated Bishop.
