Busy fire-fighters day for SVFD

According to Darryl Kerley, Fire Chief of the Seymour Volunteer Fire Department, a fire broke out in the lower level of a two-story house located at 12138 Chapman Highway on Saturday morning May 17th. The call was made to 911 emergency around 8:00 a.m. by a retired air force fire chief, who was driving by, saw the smoke, stopped, and called 911. “The fire had been going for some time before we arrived at the scene,” stated Kerley. The house was entirely engulfed in flames when the first of three engines and two tankers arrived. A total of 23 volunteer fire fighters responded to the call. There were no injuries, and the sole occupant left the house earlier that morning. It was a difficult fire as the house was nestled amongst trees and bushes which made it difficult to circumnavigate the house. According to Kerley, last Saturday was an exceptionally busy day for the Seymour Volunteer Fire Department. “There were two house fires, two vehicle wrecks and three unconscious individuals that we treated all before 2:00 p.m. In addition, we’ve spent about $10,000 on the trucks in the past two weeks. We’ve just about got things in pretty good shape.”
