Effects to benefit many areas including Seymour

Knoxville Police Chief Phil Keith today pledged his continued commitment to bring national security standards to the Knoxville region as the nation continues a vigilant watch for possible terrorist activities. As part of the Senior Advisory Committee on President Bush’s Homeland Security Advisory Council, Chief Keith is in a position to contribute significantly vital information to help strengthen this region’s response to a terrorists’ attack. Chief Keith said, “The Knoxville region is blessed with volunteers willing and able to help their community in the event of a disaster. We will draw upon that intrinsic volunteer spirit that makes this region so special.” Since last year’s inception of the Citizen Corps that was initiated by Knoxville Mayor Victor Ashe and Chief Keith, the police department has been working on establishing the groundwork for a dedicated volunteer support network. The department has been working with professional groups in several different fields that can offer assistance through specialized training or equipment. Chief Keith said, “Professionals in fields such as public health, public service, and law have contributed tremendously to this region’s ability to respond to a serious incident.” The Knoxville Police Department will continue to build on the current success of the Knoxville Citizen Corps by reaching out to individuals that can respond with unique abilities and equipment. Citizens that are capable and willing to be a part of a community emergency response team will receive training and information on how to better serve our community. “By having these citizens trained and ready for a quick response, this region will benefit not only in the event of a terrorist attack, but any emergency effort that would require the use of these additional resources,” Chief Keith concluded.
