The new cardiac catherization lab at Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center is now operational. The new lab uses technology from the Phillips Allura System, allowing physicians to perform cardiac catherizations and a broad range of radiology special procedures.
Previously, cardiac cath procedures were performed in a mobile unit that traveled to the hospital. The new unit is the first for the medical center and now provides the equipment and technology for procedures to be done in a more comfortable environment, as well as on a regular basis. The equipment also makes it possible for a variety of quantitative analysis measurements to be completed.
At the present time, only diagnostic procedures will be performed in the lab. The lab will help determine if patients who have completed a cardiac stress test or thallium scan may have coronary artery disease or peripheral vascular disease.
“The new cath lab strengthens our commitment to providing advanced patient care with leading medical technology,” said Ellen Wilhoit, president and chief administrative officer. “This investment will not only benefit our patients, but our physicians as well, giving them the technology and accommodations they need to diagnose individuals quickly and therefore begin treatment options sooner.”
The cardiac cath lab is comprised of a procedure room, four holding rooms, as well as areas for staff to admit, monitor, and recover patients.
“I’m very excited for the hospital and for the community in that services such as these can be provided locally, without having to drive to Knoxville for care,” said David Rose, cath lab coordinator.
David Ball, the first patient to benefit from the lab stated, “It was great – everything was good, clean and there were lots of doctors. I had my surgery a couple of weeks ago but things are going good. They have a great staff.”
The new cath lab is the latest addition to the array of advanced services offered by Fort Sanders Sevier. For additional information about the cardiac cath lab or other services offered by Fort Sanders Sevier, call the Fort Sanders Sevier HealthLine at 453-WELL (9355).
