Courtesy of collectit.com Question: I would like to know what these pieces of memorabilia are worth. One is a program from a dinner honoring Senator John F. Kennedy. It was given to me by Dorothy Clemens, wife of former Senator Ace Clemens from Louisiana. Both J.F.K. and Jackie autographed the front of it. It was supposed to be for their daughter, but she gave it to me when she learned I was a fan. The picture of Jackie is 8-by-10 inches and was sent to me by the White House after J.F.K. became president. Was it signed by Jackie or was a stamp used? GBM, La. Answer: That’s a generous friend you’ve got. There are two serious detractions to the front cover of this ornate dinner program — the snapshot of your friend’s husband taped to the cover and an ink inscription by your generous friend alongside the J.F.K. inscription. Nevertheless, it’s wonderful and uncommon to see authentic J.F.K. and Jacqueline Kennedy signatures on the same item. The original cord ribbon is evident, and a portrait of J.F.K. does appear on an inner page. Even with the detractions, value is around $1,300 to $1,500. Your Jacqueline Kennedy photograph is pale, but you have a secretarial or “proxy” signature. It’s a very adept imitation of her schoolgirlish script but betrays a secretarial nature by a certain timidness and rigidity not present in authentic Jackie material. There is a flamboyancy to the capital “J,” a characteristic lower case “t” and many more subtle stylistic tendencies lacking here. The “With best wishes” inscription, in particular, is weak. Jackie’s capital “W” is generally large, circular and well rounded — unlike this tall, oval example. These are just some of the major anomalies that jump out and strongly suggest a secretarial imitation.
