Sevier County Commissioners held their monthly meeting last Monday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Sevier County Court House to nearly a full house. Normal business was followed with only two people on the agenda, Rhonda Milliam and Harold Gibbs.
The various committees gave their reports.
The following considerations were voted on and passed unanimously. A Resolution authorizing the creation and appointment of the Fort Sanders Sevier County Senior Center Advisory Committee. A budget amendment for the Highway Department (Fund 131) for FY 2002 as requested by the Highway Superintendent. Budget amendments for the General Fund (Fund 101) for FY 2002 as requested by the various departments. A Resolution of Intent to Join the National Flood Insurance Program for Sevier County, TN. A Resolution concerning the settling and posting of a speed limit for Kimberly Heights Road and Stiles Road in Sevier County, TN as requested by the Highway Department and Transportation Committee. A Resolution re-appointing members to the Sevier County Board of Equalization as requested by the Property Assessor. A Resolution authorizing the Sevier County Executive to enter into an easement agreement with BellSouth for additional communication equipment on the site of the old Underwood School property located on Douglas Dam Road. A Resolution in recognition of Mr. Lincoln “Gale” Allen and his loyal dedication and service to Sevier County, TN and the Sevier County Ambulance Service. A Resolution to rescind the previous action taken by the Sevier Commission concerning the Electro-Voice/Telex Communications property in relation to a two hundred (200) foot setback restriction. A Resolution to appoint on a temporary basis a member of the E911 Board of Sevier County. And finally Notaries.
Jonas Smelcer, Superintendent of the Sevier County Roads, was asked by the committee to enlighten them as to the progress of the repairs and costs related to the recent flooding.
Smelcer reported that there were only two major projects remaining. One project is over 50% complete and the other on Bluff Mountain more than 80% complete. He mentioned FEMA would provided 75% of the repair costs of those identified as flood related and the other 25% would normally be paid for by the state. However since the state is in such dire straights, the county would have to absorb the balance. “There are several roads with minor damage, under $1,000.00, that FEMA will not cover”, stated Smelcer.
Following, Milliam was called to make her presentation. She read a written statement regarding the need for the county to adapt flood insurance.
Gibbs was next on the agenda. His comments were directed against zoning.
Prior to closing, one County Commissioner had noted that the gallery was full of new faces. He suggested that if there were any newly elected County Commissioners in attendance that they stand up. At least eight responded to a clapping ovation.
Meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:20 p.m.
