Over 397 Sevier County middle and high school students took advantage of athletic physicals sponsored by the fort Sanders Therapy Center. The physicals were offered at the therapy centers located at Fort Sanders Therapy Centers in Seymour on Tuesday, May 14th and Fort Sanders Medical Centers on Thursday, May 23rd.
Staff members performed screenings for flexibility, strength, and joint/ligament testing. Height and weight measurements were also taken. The screenings were followed by a medical physical given by Fort Sanders Sevier physicians and medical professionals.
Physicians and medical professionals who participated in the event were as follows: Dr. Wesley Payne, Dr. Robert Moore, Dr. Laura Higgins, Dr. Kevin Campbell, Dr. Jerry Bradley, Tim Thompson, PA; Dr. Steven Hall, Dr. John Reynolds, Dr. Mike Casey, Dr. Louis Riley, Dr. James Koerten, Charlie Etherton, PA; Lynn Moreland, PA; Benny Davis, CRNA; Jeff Miles, CRNA; Greg Downey, CRNA; Mike Fortner, CRNA; Dr. Richard Love, Dr. Eric Littleton and Jennifer Suttles, RN.
The center offered the physicals at a reduced rate to cover the cost of processing the information gathered during the physicals, with the remaining amount returned to each athlete’s school athletic fund. The results of each physical examination were sent to the student’s home, as well as to their physician and coach.
“We feel fortunate to be a part of this process,” said Scott Byrd, ATC, Coordinator of Sports Medicine and Wellness. “We have been developing a system that has been recognized as a top-quality program that has been gaining notoriety throughout the state. What sets our program apart is that the money collected from the physicals goes back to the athletic departments for the student athletes in the form of training supplies and other needed items for their safety and welfare.”
“Our staff of medical professionals and volunteers are the finest quality of people, without them, this undertaking would not be possible,” said Byrd. “We cannot begin to thank the medical professionals enough who participated for donating their time and efforts to make this possible.”
High school and middle school athletes are required to have a medical physical to participate in school sports. The center has offered the physicals for local students for approximately 13 years.
