Johnny Gruelle, known less by his name and more often as the “Raggedy Ann man,” worked all his life as an artist. His whimsical drawings and astute observations inspired a number of other artists and cartoonists, including Theodore Giesel and Mary Engelbright. The publications of Johnny Gruelle have been exhaustively researched and extensively cataloged in this bibliography. The foremost expert on Gruelle and his creations, Patricia Hall has compiled a beautiful volume bound to delight die-hard Raggedy collectors, Gruelle bibliophiles, and casual readers alike. With hundreds of illustrations from Gruelle’s publications, this book is more than just a bibliography; it is an annotated photographic history of one of this country’s greatest contributors to children’s literature. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Patricia Hall’s Johnny Gruelle collection is one of the most comprehensive in the world, encompassing books, dolls, merchandise, original artwork, correspondence, and photographs. She holds an M.A. in Folklore and Mythology from UCLA, and has lectured throughout the U.S. on Gruelle and his Raggedys. Ms. Hall has also written extensively for national publications on Gruelle’s contributions to American culture. In addition to Raggedy Ann and Johnny Gruelle, Hall also is the author of Raggedy Ann and More: Johnny Gruelle’s Dolls and Merchandise ($35.00), Johnny Gruelle, Creator of Raggedy Ann and Andy ($45.00) and Raggedy Ann and Andy Postcard Book ($9.95 pb), all published by Pelican.
