Well, it didn’t look like the rain was going to stop on Saturday July 20th, in Seymour.
411 Raceway had missed one weekend due to rain, and even though we had heavy down pours all day long, Buck Buckholtz (the track owner) was not backing down this time. Practice was supposed to start at 3 p.m. which is about when it stopped raining. It took 10 to 12 vehicles about 45 minutes to get the track dry and practice started soon after. Clouds moved over a couple of times, but not a drop fell.
What everyone thought was going to be a rainout turned into a great night of racing at 411 Raceway. If you have never been to 411 you are really missing out. The Raceway plays host to nine different divisions and has a great family atmosphere. It not only draws drivers from the entire state of Tennessee, but also Virginia, North and South Carolina, Kentucky, and even as far away Texas.
The Pro-Challenge had one heck of a race, #18 Mark Dyer, who is usually up front, lost it in turn four and slammed into the wall on the front straight. Number 0 Brad Housewright took over first place. It wasn’t long before Housewright saw nothing but yellow in his mirror. The yellow was from #5 Marty Arender, who made his way around Housewright. They changed positions a couple of times then as they took the white, Housewright passed Arender in turn one. Arender caught back up and went under Housewright in turn four to take the win. The order was #5 Marty Arender, #0 Brad Housewright, #4 Tom Stinnett, #1 Richard Blevins, #33 Gary Berrier.
The Chargers hit the track and #1 Linton Perry, from Kingsport, took the green and left everyone just sitting there, Linton lead from start to finish while #20 Angie Long kept a hold of the second place, #51 Angie Monhollen and #32 Travis Sands fought it out for third. They came around to take the checkered hitting in turn 3 and 4 when Angie took third. Due to post check by tech. Angie Monhollen was disqualified and Sands was declared third place, fourth went to #29r John Reed, and 5th #76 Steve Owens Jr.
Number 06 Zachary Chiz from North Carolina is only 13 years old and came into the Legends race and lead for almost half the race. The #17 Shane Roberts and #2 Fred Hardwick finally moved in and on a restart got around Chiz. #2 Fred Hardwick took the win, #17 Shane Roberts second, third was #7 Ron Humble, #37 Shane McDavid, and fifth #9 Adam Robertson. Fourth. Tom Conaway jumped out to the lead in the Classic Cars tonight, and led a good part of the race until #33 Brian Ball and #18 Gary Kelley made their way around him. Gary Made several attempts to pass Ball but just didn’t have the power to do it making #33 Brian Ball the winner, #18 Gary Kelley second, #83 Brett Baer, #1 Josh Ferguson, and fifth went to #4 Tom Conaway. 411 Raceway ran two Street Stock races Saturday night.
The Atomic Super Stocks came out first and #11 Tim Glass, who had to change his carburetor and tires to run with these cars, took the lead and never stopped until the checkered dropped with him crossing the line in first. #13 Shane Loveday took second, #6 Spencer Lemmerman thirrd, #8 Kenny Bradburn and #73 Calvin Sise finished fourth and fifth. After a quick change by Glass he was back out for the second Street Stock race. #22 Scott Robinson jumped out to the lead in this one and soon #40 Shannon Giles made his way around him. Glass worked his way up though the cars and then took over the lead with five laps to go and that is how it finished with #11 Tim Glass taking two wins in one evening, and #40 Shannon Giles was second, #3 Alton Satterfield third, and fourth went to #22 Scott Robinson.
The Modified Minis saw the Bright Green #12 Phil Derosia, in the lead for more than half of this feature. The Blue and yellow of #9 Jason Henry took over the lead from Derosia. Derosia fought back and tried to regain the lead but just couldn’t do it thus, #9
Jason Henry was the winner, #12 Phil Derosia second, #T7 Danny Tullock third, #17 Steve Owens, and #19 Bobby Northern was fifth. The 4 Cyl-Late Models were out next, #39 Jason Carter was in the lead and all of the sudden between turn three and four, Carter lost all his oil all over the track. Cars went everywhere, but none hit each other and all just missed slamming into the wall. After an extensive clean up by the officials, the new leader #98 Steve Ritchey. Ritchey took his new position and ran away with it, #98 Steve Ritchey took the win, #24 Todd Pierce second, #21 Bill Howe, #3 Byron Ward and in fifthth #46 Bobby Morgan. The Wedge Late Models had a bad start for their feature, #22 Scott King came out of turn four to take the green and went sideways, came down the track and tagged #83 Larry Gibson and then went back up the track and hit the wall. Four cars went to the pit and
only two came back out, after the restart #107.7 Scott Dyke dominated the race. Dyke took the win, with the ex-Baby Grand driver #66 Frank Emel right behind him for second, #24 Larry Sullivan , #04 Sammy Morgan, and in 5th #31A Ron Pittman.
