Why does Sevier County not have a recycling center? Is there something I can do to provoke the county to begin an intensive recycling program similar to Knox County's? I desperately need to recycle my plastic bottles, glass, and steel cans. Any information you can provide would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Just curious but why do you "need" to recycle? Is Al Gore gonna come get you in the middle of the night?

#2 sAVE THE PLANET commented, on December 31, 2007 at 11:03 p.m.:

Al Gore will figure out everthing

#3 JM commented, on January 1, 2008 at 12:49 p.m.:

YES YOU ARE RIGHT. WE NEED TO RECYCLE. THERE'S NO REASON NOT TO.

#4 Cygnus X commented, on January 1, 2008 at 8:39 p.m.:

sounds like a typical attitude.. "Why do I need to recycle"? Figure it out. Don't stay retarded, ok?

#5 Go home Yankee commented, on January 2, 2008 at 12:39 a.m.:

and take your ways with you. We wouldn't need to recycle if so damn many of you had not of moved here and clogged up the landfill with your shit!

#6 T.Leonard commented, on January 2, 2008 at 4:15 p.m.:

I know a little about the landfill business,I can be reached at Sevier Solid Waste if you have any questions about recycling.

maybe yankeeees should not be allowed to vote till they have lived here 20 years or more

#8 "Visitor" commented, on January 3, 2008 at 10:16 a.m.:

Sounds like these southrun redneck republicans got it all figured out. Wow, the locals sure have a way to go. Must be all that good schoolin here in progressive Sevier County.

#9 Why? commented, on January 3, 2008 at 5:34 p.m.:

I am just wondering why a response questioning the vulgarity of #5 was taken off, but #5 was not. This does not seem to make any sense. Language like that should not be allowed on here. Comments about them should not be taken off.

#10 response to #9 commented, on January 3, 2008 at 6:28 p.m.:

Thank you from the one who questioned why they did not censor the foul language, but got censored for questioning "the powers that be." Thanks for noticing.

We may both be censored.

#13 Educated Voters commented, on January 3, 2008 at 8:23 p.m.:

And with such highly educated voters like #5 above, you now can understand why Larry Waters has been re-elected for almost 30 years. Wow.

#14 KF commented, on January 3, 2008 at 8:48 p.m.:

Hi. I would also like to recycle locally. I'm aware of some newspaper and magazine places, but I'd like to also recycle cans and glass. Any info would be appreciated.

#15 Helping #14 commented, on January 3, 2008 at 10:10 p.m.:

If you know where the dumpsters are for magazines and papers, just dump the rest of your trash in there. If those people really want your magazines and papers bad enough they won't mind taking care of our extras for you. I usually clean out my car at those places and dump all the crap in there. I feel good knowing I'm doing my part by not dumping it along the road.

#16 Question? commented, on January 3, 2008 at 11:21 p.m.:

Why do republicans have such a hard time understanding the benifits of recycling?

#17 republican and into recycling commented, on January 4, 2008 at 12:13 a.m.:

I recycle and am a Republican.

#18 RR commented, on January 4, 2008 at 8:55 a.m.:

The dump behind Don Floyds needs to be cleaned up, or closed all together!!!

#19 Choices commented, on January 4, 2008 at 4:50 p.m.:

Sevier County doesn't have a recycling center for the same reason we don't have a "parks department". Our county leaders choose not to spend money on those items and the public accepts it. They reserve your tax monies for more important things like Tax Increment Financing (TIF) - tax givaways to rich developers to support more tourism dollars. Sevier County doesn't use it's tax monies to benifit the local population, it uses it's tax monies to enlarge the tourism pie that is controled by a handfull of commissioners/developers. They profit at our expense and they will continue until the public says enough. Vote.

#20 a voter commented, on January 6, 2008 at 8:10 a.m.:

Why doesn't someone stand up and demand services like those offered by forward thinking communities? I want my tax dollars benefitting ME! Not developers and the tourism industry!

I read somewhere that the county mayor has been in charge for more than 25 years.

That may be the problem.

A solution is needed!

#21 Republican commented, on January 6, 2008 at 8:11 a.m.:

If being a Southern Republican means being filthy and irresponsible, I can only point to the filth and bilge of Northern Democrats who are leaving their "clean" homes in New Jersey and the Metro New York Area.

Anyone ever rented to one of these "recycling" Democrat/welfare recipients? Filthiest of the filthy!

As for recycling facilities, don't ask everyone to pay more taxes so that you can recycle "conveniently." Put your trash in your own vehicle and drive it to one of the many recycling areas that happen to be all over Tennessee. If it's that much of an issue to you, just do it yourself for yourself. Being green is as easy as a Google search!

The complaint about driving to another county should be non-existent! Most people that I know would rather make a big day about driving an hour to go to Target in Turkey Ck to shop than drive to Walmart in the center of Sevierville. Just alter your priorities and do your green on the way!

#22 Response commented, on January 6, 2008 at 8:58 a.m.:

In response to Republican.

You preface your opening sentence with the word "if."

It would be more accurate if you omitted that word from the sentence.

Everyone knows that being republican means being filthy and irresponsible regardless of the locale.

#23 A Southern Republican commented, on January 6, 2008 at 6:49 p.m.:

There is a recycling center at 225 W. Moody in South Knoxville. I go into Knoxville at least 3 times a month and simply make sure to drop off my plastic, etc... on one of my trips. BTW Sevier County's system is not so backward. The center on Ridge Road may not smell so pleasant, but it has a highly sophisticated method of disposing of our trash. Check into it....it is pretty interesting! Unfortunately, the last I heard they did not do the plastic recycling.

And I do agree...The dump behind Floyd's market does need to be cleaned up. I prefer to take my garbage to either Boyd's Creek or the dump on Byrds Creek when I'm up that way visiting family.

See, not all Republicans are filthy and irresponsible. Stop making generalizations; I know some Democrats who are filthy and irresponsible! :D

#24 Recycling commented, on January 6, 2008 at 7:17 p.m.:

We are so forward thinking in Sevier County that we recycle our dead/diseased animals into compost and spread it around the county. No other municipality does that kind of advanced recycling in the state. I think Larry is the head of the solid waste board that came up with that idear. There is a "recycling center" on every side road in Sevier County, just drive around, you'll see it, lots of neighbors use the one on my street.

#25 YIMBY commented, on January 6, 2008 at 7:26 p.m.:

I know of 12-15 places that recycle used appliances around the county - they are a little steep and overgrown but does that count?

#26 Hey 25 commented, on January 9, 2008 at 5:33 p.m.:

Most of those places also take old tires, old couches and household garbage. Been doin' that for years.

#27 sevierborn commented, on January 12, 2008 at 12:34 a.m.:

The Center on Ridge Road in Sevierville recycles all types of material and all from our garbage that is taken to that facility. If you take your trash to a Sevier Dump or have city pick up your trash is recycled. I use to take all mine to Knoxville until I did some investigating. We are not so bad!

#28 Adam Littlehawk commented, on February 20, 2008 at 10:34 a.m.:

You know, we wouldn't have to worry about recyling if all of you, Yankees, Rednecks, Republicans, whatever wern't here. Trash was never a problem till you showed up, now it's a biggie. 'Specially the white trash!

#29 An American: The civil war is over. commented, on February 21, 2008 at 2:47 p.m.:

From a yankee conservative since the 40's: we picked up glass bottles for redemption, kept our streets and yards clean from old cars we couldn't drive by recycling them into other old vehicles, recycled glass, metals, paper etc., in Germany once a month while also serving the people of the US as military members; And to this day We are card carrying members of the Keep America Beautiful System since 1987. Face it, yankees and rebels need to drop the name calling, join forces and save the world by starting at home. Take care of your own family members who need help. Stop relying on the govt. Oh yes, we are the govt and every tax dollar that the rich pay eventually comes from those who will not take the initiative and grow their own food, breed their own animals and leave everything to big daddy and mommy govt. God bless America and I hope she wakes up the lazy liberals who only judge hard working conservatives who do recyle just work a bit harder at it instead of complaining about what their govt should do for them. I leave you with these famous words. "A government big enough to give you everything is strong enough to take it all away." T. Jefferson

#30 to #20 commented, on February 22, 2008 at 7:15 p.m.:

Move back up North where your tax dollars go for crap like that!

It's always the transplant SOB's that want to change everything around here. Why is it that you never hear of people in the South moving up North to retire???? Cause the Noth SUCKS ASS!

#31 Adam Littlehawk commented, on February 23, 2008 at 9:45 p.m.:

To #30;
I agree with you on one thing, it's all the transpalnted SOB's that are the cause of our problems. Why not take your own advice and go back to where ever you originated. Things were great in these hills till all you palefaces showed up.

#32 Little Eagle commented, on February 25, 2008 at 11:07 p.m.:

To #30 and #31
Shame on both of you talking, trash. You both need to worry about the Politics and the Cruptions that the Native Tennesseans are doing here in Sevier County. Transplants are the least of your worries, look at how our tax dollars are spent. Jackie Parton cried wolf the schools were in a crises and what happened we got a 25% property tax increase. Do you know how much went to the schools?? I will tell
you 2%.The money went to hire a buddy at the central office that wasn't needed. Other jobs made for families. Most of the employees in the school are related, dirty politics so you #30.look around and see what the natives are doing. As I see it transplants you call are far better than what we have in our community

#33 Answer the ? commented, on February 27, 2008 at 4:46 p.m.:

Why Don't southern folks move up north to retire? Because the north is so screwed up that they move her to get away from it. Then they impose the ways of the north on us. They bitch and complain because they are not getting the services they were use to up north. Guess what...it takes MORE taxes to get the services you were getting up north. We don't need anymore taxes.

This used to be a beautiful place 20 years ago. Now 3 out of 5 of my neightbors are damn yankees. You can't get away from them and their liberal ways.

#34 Jed Ogle commented, on February 27, 2008 at 11:52 p.m.:

Yes, all us local conservatives know egxactly how to vote for honest politicialns that represents are community to the bestest. We dont need none of you liberals telling us nothing. We be better an you way far.
