In this film John Plummer (Jason Lee) plays a good-hearted guy who just wants to marry his longtime fiancée, Elaine Warner (Leslie Mann). Plummer is working for his fiancés father’s business played by Dennis Farina. He owns a medical supply store, but Mr. Warner is less than happy with his future son-in-law. After months of saving John and Elaine finally have reached their goal for saving $30,000 and are ready to get hitched. Then comes the niece Noreen (Tammy Blanchard) along with John’s trailer-trash sister sister Patty (Megan Mullally) showing him a videotape they saved since grade school in which John promises to play for his niece’s college education. She is accepted into Harvard at the tone of, you guessed it, nearly $30,000 or $28,800 to be exact. Now what? That’s when John’s best friend Duff (Tom Green) stepped in to help.
The two try various ways to get the money, many of which are funny to watch. Those moments include John getting dressed up as a woman and the store clerk doing his thing (I don’t want to give it away). Director Kevin Smith does his part in keeping the film moving. Though it’s not a film I’d rank as Academy Award quality, it is funny in a Tom Green kind of way and the movie is fun to watch.
The critics are giving this one a thumbs down. I thought it was cute and hubby liked it as well. On a scale of five IIIII I’d give it a two II
