I attended a fantastic event Monday evening in Seymour at the beautiful home of Jim and Judy Arwood.

If you have read the front page story you know the event was the Kick-Off for the formation of a Seymour Boys and Girls Club.

Can you image that.

Seymour is finally getting a Boys and Girls Club.

It's about time. It's all about timing.

Seymour is the largest community in the county and yet has the least amount of public services.

I applaud Mark Ross and his staff, Rob Ailey, Dr. Bill Fry, Senator Finney and Representative Montgomery and Jim and Judy Arwood for making this commitment to this community.

What they are unselfishly doing is not for them selves. It's for the future of our community and a major investment in our children.

Getting the club going is Seymour is a large step. Mark, a resident of Cherokee Hill, saw the need daily, for a local Boys and Girls Club. It took the culmination of certain events to bring the key people together to make it a reality.

But first, it was a dream.

We need to start dreaming of other great things that can happen in and for Seymour.

Why do you think all the new businesses are coming to Seymour. They see something good.

People that were born and raised here as well as those that have moved here also see something good.

But rather than taking much from Seymour, it's time to give back.

Give back by donating your time, money, energy and other abilities to make Seymour the best place to live, work and play.

Don't you want to be proud of where you live?

I urge each resident to do one thing next week that is in some way benefiting the Seymour Community.

Can you imagine that? About 28,000 people doing one thing this week to benefit Seymour in a positive way.

I can.

And I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is.

Let us know what you or someone you know did during the week of the 15th thru the 21st of July.

Send us a story about it and all the details and a phone number, with or without pictures, or video and the one that is picked to be the most unselfish and beneficial act to the community will be awarded a $100 from The Seymour Herald.

Maybe some of the other local businesses will also contribute to this worthy cause.

To qualify, send your story, pictures, video, details to Scenic Seymour %The Seymour Herald, PO Box 1228, Seymour Tn 37865 or email to editor@seymourherald.com or to Seymour Herald, 500 Maryville Hwy, Seymour Tn 37865 by July 25, 2005.

For further information or to donate time or money towards the Seymour Boys & Girls Club contact Mark Ross at 428-5437 or on the internet at http://www.bgcsmoky.com/index.asp

It's really amazing that so many people are in for the B&G Club coming to Seymour but are these the same people who were shooting down the building of a park in Seymour? "It took the culmination of certain events to bring the key people together to make it a reality." Could this lead to rumors of back door meetings, etc?
"We need to start dreaming of other great things that can happen in and for Seymour." Some people already did this at got their ideals and suggestions shoved into their faces.

What is the heck is that Joyce person talking about??? Anyway, if we can get a Boys and Girls Club in Seymour and there are people willing to help then that's great. Quit being so negative folks. Let's do what we can to help. The kids will love it.

Let's see how long it takes to get the $100,000 that's needed...oh yeah, and a place to build it. In case you haven't noticed, they ain't just giving away free land in Seymour!

#5 Prayer works!! commented, on July 11, 2007 at 9:22 p.m.:

Look up. If we all prayed and prayed hard this task at hand would ease. God can make all things happen. Faith of a mustard seed is all you need. Land, money and people to help will be no big deal. God is ready to work we just need to ask him!!

To the person that made the comment, lets see how long it takes to get the $100,000, actually $50,000 of that has already been raised, and yeah they are giving away free land in Seymour, the land has already been donated in Seymour. Any more negative comments?

#8 Calling on God commented, on July 12, 2007 at 8:35 p.m.:

I believe in God. I pray to God. I just find it hard to believe that God would personally care whether there's a Boys & Girls Club in little ol' Seymour, TN.

Again, someone spouting off their mouth without the facts. No one is "shooting" down a park in Seymour. What is not wanted is a private sports complex built for the sole use of the optimists. Read the articles again, or better yet, come to one of the meetings to discuss the issue. A nice neighborhood park that the boy and girls clubs could use would be wonderful. Unfortunetly, that area does flood (something the optimists tend to ignore) so building on it wouldn't make sense, but to have it used as a park that everyone could access. Priceless!

#10 To #9 commented, on July 16, 2007 at 11:50 a.m.:

You make the point that the Optimists ignore the fact that the land in question floods. Then you propose that same land be developed into a park. Will it not flood then?

#11 to #10 commented, on July 16, 2007 at 12:50 p.m.:

Of course it will flood .. but having an open pavilion to grill a nice lunch is different from having concession stands, indoor basketball courts, clover leaf bball fields, etc. Less damage would occur with a community park than what the optimists are proposing. Any other negative thoughts?

#12 Cygnus X commented, on July 16, 2007 at 4:09 p.m.:

I never really liked the Optimists, I thought they always manhandled their way into politics and govt. money for a long time. It should be a county park for county taxpayers and visitors, ya know?

#13 Carl commented, on July 19, 2007 at 7:28 p.m.:

Parks and golf courses are the best land use for flooding areas. When it rains the park and golf course is closed. When the rain stops, the grass is watered and the park and golf course is open.
