(The Herald/ Archived Photo)Placing an emphasis on higher education and community service is a local program offered to area college students through the Seymour Volunteer Fire Department.

“One of the biggest benefits students receive in participating with this program has been the tuition assistance we offer them” explained SVFD Grant and Volunteer Coordinator Tasha Pitsenbarger. “Not only do they receive tuition assistance, they are given a                place to live at no cost to them and firefighter and first responder training.”

Although the program is made possible through a Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) grant SVFD received from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), space for the program is limited.
