With both the local State Representative and State Senate incumbents challenged by candidates within the Republican Party, Sevier County had an interesting Primary Election Aug. 2.

While challenger Dale Carr beat out long-time 12th District State Representative Richard Montgomery by a narrow margin, incumbent Doug Overbey handily locked-out Scott Hughes and retained his seat on the Second District Sate Senate.

Voting numbers provided by Sevier County Election Commission reported 3,535 votes for Carr and 3,457 for Montgomery, making Carr the victor by 78 votes or two percent.

“I appreciate everybody, each and everybody who came out and voted no matter who they voted for,” Carr said. “If just a few people stayed home, we could have had much different results.”
