Being a member of the Seymour Volunteer Fire Department is a job requiring extreme dedication and time management, but when experience gained from serving the community is a gateway to becoming a career firefighter, an extra level of enthusiasm is needed.

Andrew Scruggs, who has been a member of the SVFD for six months, said he looks forward to serving his community while gaining the necessary experience and training that will help him to pursue a career as a paid firefighter.

“Training is about 70 percent of being a member,” he said. “Some training has to be updated every year. There is always something new to learn.”

Currently Scruggs is taking a hazardous materials class that is teaching him how to react to chemical spills and apply the proper containment processes.
