On the rise nationally, the use of synthetic drugs has caused widespread concern among legislators and law enforcement alike.

In Sevier County the problem is largely contained to the municipalities, according to Captain Randy Parton of the Sevier County Sheriff’s drug unit.

Synthetic drugs have been sold in retail stores and over the internet by companies that commonly misrepresent the harmful substance as either bath salts or plant food.

Yet some companies who manufacture the disguised drug continue to slightly alter the chemical makeup of the substance in an attempt to skirt laws.
