In the modern age of mass consumerism it is a rare treat to see a store stick to its heritage and continue the historic legacy of being the oldest dime store in the south.

Located in South Knoxville at 4014 Chapman Highway, Emery’s 5 & 10 has survived its fair share the economic ups and downs that have shaped much of the business world of this country.

Established in 1927, Emery’s has evolved out of the classic retail tradition originally developed by Frank Woolworth.

“In the late 1800s all retail stores where long and narrow,” said Ron Emery, owner of the shop.  “The merchandise was never priced and there were counters setup so customers never touched the merchandise. The clerk would price items based on the perceived wealth of a customer.
