In compliance with a Federal regulation, a crew from the Sevier County Utility District (SCUD) inspected and cleaned a gas valve located on Boyds Creek Tuesday morning.

Randy Underwood, Construction Maintenance Director for SCUD, said the inspections take place annually and gas valves are cleaned as needed.

“We make sure they are working properly so we can turn them off or redirect the gas from a certain area in case of an emergency,” Underwood said.

According to Underwood, the valves themselves usually do not require cleaning, but the jacket that houses them can often be weighted down by a gradual development of mud and water. To remedy the situation a vacuum hose is used to remove the natural debris.
