Although Austin Smith has been a member of the Seymour Volunteer Fire Department for less than one month, he has already seen a fair amount of excitement.

Smith, 19, said he joined the SVFD as a way to support his community, but also as a launching pad for an eventual career as a full-time firefighter.

“I’ve always had an interest in a career as a firefighter,” he said. “Seymour is a good place to start.”

Since completing training in April, Smith has been a cooperative part of dosing two major fires in the Seymour area.
