Local library staff and supporters handed out free books to Seymour Boys & Girls Club members and their parents last Monday in honor of the nation’s first World Book Night.

Colleen Shannon, president of Friends of the Seymour Library, and David Phillips, the library’s branch manager, handed out paperback copies of two best-selling books, “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins and “Zeitoun” by Dave Eggers.

The mission of World Book Night is to encourage reading, especially among people who are not regular readers. It worked on one girl who showed an interest in “The Hunger Games.”

“You read the book, I’ll take you to the movie,” her mother promised. Other children pleaded with their parents to let them read the book.
