Charles Ogle is in his 33rd year teaching. He has taught in Polk County, at Caton’s Chapel Elementary School, Seymour Primary and Middle schools and has settled in at Seymour High School for the past 11 years.
He teaches economics and Appalachian Studies. Outside of the classroom he is also very involved. He has been involved with BETA club in some form for around 30 years. He has sponsored it at schools, been a state sponsor and is on the Tennessee State Council.
“This year our freshman quiz bowl team came in second place,” said Ogle, “and they get to go to the National Convention in June.”
Ogle also coaches the bowling team. In his experience coaching the past seven years, he said bowling is more competitive on the western side of the state, but he has sent at least one player on the boys’ team to the state tournament each year he has coached.
The third extracurricular group Ogle is involved with is Mock Trial.
The Tennessee Bar Association comes up with scenarios and sends it out to the schools. Students act as witnesses and defendants and the other positions in a trial.
It requires a good deal of writing and research, which culminates with a competition against another school in the district. A win qualifies Seymour for the state tournament.
Ogle enjoys teaching and impacting the lives of the students he teaches, but sometimes working with them is difficult.
“It’s strange with teaching, because the hardest part is the best part,” Ogle said.
