The Seymour Eagles basketball team is now 4-0 as they recently picked up a big win at home against the Heritage Mountaineers by a score of 65-62.
For the first time since 2006 the Eagles are undefeated after four games into the season.
The game went back and forth until late in the second quarter when Heritage went on a 15-5 scoring run. The Mountaineers sent the Eagles to the locker room with a 35-27 halftime lead.
The third quarter was a battle with the lead staying pretty much the same.
The Eagles, in the fourth quarter decided it was time to make a move as they outscored Heritage by 4 points with 15 seconds remaining. They were still trailing by 2 points, but they had hung around to be in position to take the lead on one shot.
Seymour Coach Brian Jessie then drew up a 3 point set play which worked to perfection as John Lavin nailed a 3 pointer to put the Eagles up by one. The crowd was loud and electric as the game went down to the wire.
The Mountaineers then called time with their own set play called. It didn’t work, but it didn’t matter because they had 6 players on the court. A technical was called. Seymour hit them and took the game at 65-62.
Peyton Lee led the team with 16 points. He was followed by Bobbo Chesser with 12; D. J. Griffin with 11 and 11 rebounds (double – double); Logan Jenkins and John Lavin had 8 each, while Eric White and Gunner Gibson finished with 4 each and played strong at the post.
“We didn’t play real well but we played well enough to win,” said Jessie. “We were still pleased with a win. We did what we were supposed to do.”
Next the Eagles will be traveling to Rutledge for the Grizzly Tournament.
