The Seymour Volunteer Fire Department will hold an open house at Station 1 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 19 for members of the community who are interested in joining the fire department.
Residents can visit Station 1, located at 101 Ford Hill Lane, to pick up an application and ask any questions about the fire service or department.
Prospective applicants can apply through the end of the year to participate in the rookie school the department will offer next year.
“It really takes commitment and dedication to the community to succeed in this field,” said SVFD firefighter Courtney McCarter. “Sure juggling work, family and the duties of the department are difficult, but the self-satisfaction you get when someone tells you how thankful they are that you showed up to help them truly makes it all worth while.”
With the high number of calls, the department is looking for many young, able-bodied individuals to join and begin assisting right away.
The department responds to around 1,800 calls per year, including fires, vehicle accidents and medical calls, which gives firefighters a variety of incidents to respond to.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
