The Sevier County Board of Education voted at Monday’s meeting to resume their previous stance regarding sex offenders, following a policy change enacted due to miscommunication about state law.
Last month, the board approved a policy change that would allow parents who are registered sex offenders to attend school functions in which their children are participating.  
The decision, which was believed to have been made in accordance with state laws, did not sit well with the board.  It turns out they were right.
“I was the one who recommended this to the board of education,” said Director of Schools Jack Parton.  “It was a miscommunication.”
The board almost immediately reversed its decision, but had to wait until Monday to officially resume the old policy, which they voted to do.  
The misinterpretation stemmed from Tennessee law allowing offenders to attend school events, such as parent teacher conferences, only with written approval by school officials, which is now once again the stance of the School Board.
“I'm glad we got it corrected and we're going in the right direction,” Parton said.
