In the crisp mid-morning air, the Piedmont Lady Lions and the Huntingdon Hawks raced their way to the Great South Athletic Conference's women's and men's cross country titles.
Holli Abernathy led the way for Piedmont coming in just behind Covenant's Tera Woods. Jeffery Jenkins was the overall winner for the Hawks. This is the second straight victory for Huntingdon while Piedmont women win their first since 2003.
Crossing the finish line first for the women, Woods was named Runner of the Year by the conference for her outstanding performance. Runner-up Abernathy had a stand out day not only being named to the All-Freshman team but also Freshman of the Year and All-Conference. Piedmont head coach Charlie Patterson was named Women's Coach of the Year for coaching his Lady Lions to another title.
Jenkins had an outstanding race for the men leading the entire 8k and never losing stride. His performance earned him not only All-Conference honors but also Runner of the Year.
Maryville freshman Boston Maxwell, finishing third, received All-Freshman and All-Conference honors and was given the Freshman of the Year award on the men's side. Huntingdon coach Nate Rucker received the Men's Coach of the Year after leading his squad to a second straight title.
