Along with establishments like Kay’s Ice Cream, the United Grocery Outlet on Chapman Highway is a staple of South Knoxville.  And it will continue to be, albeit with a new, fresher look.
For the past two months, the store has undergone some hefty renovations, from a new paint job to brand new shelving.  When the remodel is finished this weekend, manager Matt Storm hopes the results will be clear.
“We’re trying to keep the vintage look and feel,” he said.  “But basically everything inside is new.”
When he started as manager in January, Storm already knew the changes he would make, with an aim toward establishing a cleaner, more respectable feel.  This stemmed from a long history with the store.
“I’ve been shopping at this store since I was five,” he said.
The goal, Storm indicated, is to draw in customers who have always known the UGO was there, but not what it was.  He said he’s already been seeing people from as far away as Pigeon Forge, which he attributes to the need for quality products at prices much lower than the major chains.
To help further the store’s new image, customers will be able to enter a drawing every couple of weeks to win a $50 gift card.  Storm was not sure when that promotion would begin, but said a new exterior sign would allow them to update customers on new promotions, items and discounts.
The UGO is located at 6021 Chapman Highway in South Knoxville.
