The Maryville College Student Athlete Advisory Committee, under the advisement of Amber Lee, combined with MC student-athletes to volunteer and help Tennessee Area 15 Special Olympics in their bowling competition this fall.
In conjunction with the NCAA Division III’s Special Olympics initiative Fighting Scot student-athletes will volunteer throughout the year to help local organizer Cookie Crowson in a variety of activities. The next competition is softball on October 19th. Others seeking to volunteer their time or resources are encouraged to call 865-983-9244.
The purpose of the partnership is to improve the lives of Special Olympics athletes through their involvement with Division III student-athletes and to foster a mutual learning experience between Division III student-athletes and Special Olympics athletes.
Through this partnership, Division III student-athletes across the country will be encouraged to participate in existing Special Olympics events, create their own events, or otherwise serve to support Special Olympics organization. The activities pursued by student-athletes will vary in each state and region, tailored to best utilize the student-athletes' time and local resources.
Area 15 Special Olympics is open to Blount County citizens 8 years & older. The ultimate goal of the program is to help persons with intellectual disabilities participate as productive and respected members of society, by offering them fair opportunities to develop and demonstrate their skills and talents through sports training and competition, and by increasing public awareness of their capabilities and needs.
Schools and centers across Blount County participate in these events. However, any person who's school or center does not participate OR any adult who does not attend a school or center is eligible to compete as an independent athlete. Five athletic competitions are held each year.
