The day after Boston Red Sox hurler Tim Wakefield eclipsed the 200 career win plateau on his eighth attempt, Maryville College’s Kandis Schram needed only one opportunity to step into the 600 win club.
Maryville swept the Georgian Scots of Covenant College 3-0 by the scores of 25-22, 26-24, and 30-28.
MC’s reigning GSAC Player of the Week Kristin Findley blasted an amazing 20 kills while recording her 7th double-double performance of the season adding 11 digs. Kara Strickland added 11 kills and 15 digs for her second consecutive double-double effort. Lauren Bonee and Teri paced the offense with 33 combined assists while six Scots posted double digit digs including team leaders Kristen Sharp and Katherine Nadler with 17 apiece.
Following Coach Schram’s 500th career coaching victory in 2006, the team fit the school’s most successful volleyball coach with a keepsake ring, complete with five garnet stones to commemorate the moment; a stone for each of her 100 wins. The ring needs a new stone following five additional seasons with MC’s volleyball mentor earning her 600th career volleyball coaching while directing the Scots program on Wednesday evening against Covenant College.
“Anytime that you reach a milestone it validates that you are doing something right,” said Schram.  “It has never been about the wins but the ability to get the most out of our players consistently for the past 26 seasons.”
Coach Schram and her staff have definitely developed and maintained a level of consistent excellence during her tenure. The program has been to nine NCAA post-season tournaments, seven directed by Schram. Her teams have captured eight Great South Athletic Conference tournament titles since joining the league in 2000. During the regular season MC claimed seven GSAC crowns which helped Kandis earn a league-high Great South Coach of the Year post-season accolades. Her efforts as an MC player, coach, and administrator were lauded when she was inducted into the Maryville College Wall of Fame in 2006.
For the amount of talent that the Scots have displayed over the years, Coach Schram is often asked what her favorite moments have been while developing her student-athletes.
“Ironically, the graduations, weddings, championship moments, and trips will supersede any win plateau,” Schram said. “Our experience this fall in Costa Rica will be a lasting memory.”
