On a beautiful cool morning at Panther Creek State Park, the Maryville College men's and women's cross  country teams raced well as the only NCAA Division III school amidst a field of NCAA Division II teams.
The MC women were led by freshman Stephanie Knepfel (22:55) who was closely followed to the line by junior Sarah McGinnis (23:11).  Sarah was followed by Whitney Hunt (24:48), Ashlyn Kittrell (25:43), and Brandi Milsaps (26:24) who rounded out the top five scoring positions.
On the men's side, freshman Boston Maxwell and junior Travis Wilson set pace for the Scots finishing with strong 28:54 and 29:19 showings on the hilly 8k course. Freshman David Sturchio (32:00), sophomore Hayden Brown (33:23), and freshman John Mainland (34:12) rounded out the top five for the Scots.
The women's team finished seventh of the eight participants behind Tennessee Wesleyan but ahead of Tusculum.
The men finished seventh of nine challengers, just fourteen points behind Carson Newman and only five points behind Catawba College but ahead of Tusculum and Johnson University.
"We ran much better than two weeks ago,” said Coach Tyson Murphy. “We have a lot of freshman who are getting much more comfortable at the college level.
“We had several personal bests today on a tough course, which means we are getting faster individually and as a team.
“Finishing seventh was actually very respectable places when you look at the scholarship schools that finished ahead of us.
“We need to keep this kind of success up next week as we preview the conference course next week at Covenant.  It was a great Saturday."
