The Jazz Band at Walters State is seeking members of the community who can play a brass or woodwind instrument to complete the ensemble.
Currently, the group lacks several trumpet and trombone players, and needs to fill a saxophone spot.
“Walters State does not have enough students to fill all of the seats for a full size jazz ensemble,” Scott Hall said, a member of the band. “The band has historically relied upon the community.”
Members of the band receive instruction from music professors at the school. The jazz band keeps members challenged and they stay at performance level.
“It is nice to have a goal to work toward,” Hall said. “Normally I would not play as much or as well if I did not participate in the band.”
Walters State takes a variety of skill levels. Current skill levels range from professionals to students and hobbyists working to hone their talents through professional instruction.
The Jazz Band has one formal concert at the end of each semester. Members also perform when other campus groups need music.
On Oct. 6 and 7, the band will provide music for Backbeat, which does singing, dancing and acting.
Occasionally, the group has gone into the community. In the past, they have played at retirement homes. They have also played with the Air Force Band and Guy Lombardo Big Band.
The Jazz Band only practices on Mondays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Those who are interested or have questions can contact Dr. Deborah Hicks, Director of Professional Entertainment Program, at (865) 774-5810. Prospective members can also join the band on Monday at 4:00 in the CAPE building at Walters State Community College, Sevier Campus.
