The Seymour High School Volleyball Team recently held its major fundraiser of the year last weekend, and also recently found out they’ll be playing their games closer to home.
Team members and parents, along with SHS volleyball head coach Ed Irwin, worked for five hours on Saturday raising money by selling baked goods and washing cars.
“It is really our major fundraiser,” Irwin said. “Our budget for volleyball really isn’t very high.”
The team needs about $2,000 to $2,500 to get through each season, according to Irwin. That money goes toward paying for officials, uniforms and tournaments.
“We raised over $1,300 on Saturday with our carwash and bake sale, so we are really please,” Irwin said. “It was a real successful day.”
The team relies on concession sales and gate income at home games for the rest of the money for the season.
While money generated at home games funds the girls’ season, it was unclear until recently where those home games would be located.
Due to construction at the SHS gym, the team is unable to practice or even hold games on their home turf.
Originally Irwin worked it out so the girls would play their five conference home matches at South-Doyle, but as of Tuesday those games will be held closer to home.
All five of the home games will now be held at their regularly scheduled times at Seymour Middle School.
“The parents agreed to take care of all the logistics of the gate and the concessions during the matches,” Irwin said. “The gate income and the concessions will go to the team just as the car wash did.
“It will help us with our expenses. “
The games at SMS will be held on the following days: Sept. 8 at 5 and 6 p.m. against Sevier Co.; Sept. 13 at 5 and 6 p.m. against Cocke County; Sept. 22 at 5 and 6 p.m. against Morristown West; Sept. 27 at 5 and 6 p.m. against South-Doyle; Sept. 29 at 5 and 6 p.m. against Jefferson County.
