Sevier County Schools received the Federal Rural Education Grant which will give the district $238,000 to make improvements this year.
The money will go toward purchasing computers and upgrading the computer systems.
“We targeted upgrading and expanding of computers in middle schools,” said Debra Cline, Director of Curriculum and Instruction. “Every school that has seventh and eighth grade will get new computers.”
The district qualified for this grant by becoming a Title VI district. A Title VI district has a poverty index of 20 percent or higher. The Federal government evaluates school districts each year. Because of the increased number of children that receive free or reduced lunch, Sevier County now qualifies.
Sevier County will receive this grant for four to five years. The amount awarded may fluctuate, but will stay at about the amount received this year.
Cline said that each year the district will evaluate the needs of the schools and see where the money will be most beneficial.
