The Open Hands Thrift Shop, a new addition to Chapman Highway, is now open and on a mission to give customers good deals on merchandise and help community members.
Nancy Nuccio opened Open Hands two weeks ago, inspired by the massive storms earlier this spring.
“I believe God puts us here to help people,” Nuccio said.
This spring, her brother’s friend lost many belongings in the tornado that hit their house and had trouble finding assistance.
Nuccio said she has tried to assist people in need all of her life and loves to do it. She wants to have the ability to support herself as well as others in need.
On the weekends, Nuccio goes to flea markets and yard sales to find items to sell in her store. She also receives donations of various items periodically.
“There are a lot of families that only get one check a month, and they can use a little help,” Nuccio said.
So far she has been able to help eight families and has given children clothes for school. She gives cleaning supplies to the elderly, and has given food to dogs at the pound.
She sells everything from $5 prom dresses to children’s toys and furniture.
Nuccio stresses that, unlike the previous tenants, she sells her goods for much more reasonable prices.
The store is located at 12819 Chapman Highway and is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
