Maryville College freshman soccer standout David Lethco did more than just prepare for his inaugural collegiate season as a Fighting Scot this summer.
The Maryville High School graduate spent the break traveling with a group of 70 people from three local churches to Johannesburg and Soweto, South Africa as part of the International World Changer organization. Lethco is a member of the First Baptist Church in Knoxville. They took 28 members from their congregation.
“We went to downtown Johannesburg and taught nutrition, manners, and character through lessons shown in Bible stories to young girls through the sixth grade, “stated Lethco. “We also witnessed through ‘Sports Evangelism’ in a nearby high school by teaching life lessons through western sports such as baseball, football, and Frisbee.”
In addition to soccer and sport clinics the group helped plant a new church, ran Bible clinics, and partnered with the Door of Hope Ministry to help care for abandoned babies.
"I loved every minute of being in Africa, and I already want to go back,” stated the freshman forward. “God revealed himself in so many ways. This trip was truly a blessing."
David joins a ten man freshman class at Maryville College. He and his 33 additional teammates will prepare for their first team workout on Monday, August 22nd. The freshmen are on campus for an orientation session to prepare for the 2011-2012 academic year.
The Maryville College men’s soccer program will be seeking their seventh Great South Athletic Conference title and fourth NCAA post-season bid this fall.
