Medic Regional Blood Center continues to report dwindling supplies during the summer which leads to critical shortages of most popular blood types.
“Community blood banks are encouraged to keep seven to nine days of blood on hand in preparation for emergencies,” said Christi Fightmaster, Medic’s Director of Public Relations. “Medic has been operating on a one to two day supply most days and some days back ordered on specific types which means not being able to fill hospital orders.”
According to current inventory reports, the shortage is affecting the more popular blood types, such as O and A Positive—the two most common types of blood.
Eligible donors are encouraged to visit a community drive or one of two donors center: 1601 Ailor Avenue or 11000 Kingston Pike/Farragut behind Pittsburgh Paints.
For a list of community blood drives throughout the area check out the Community Calendar on page B6.
Donors must be 17 years of age or older, weigh 110 pounds or more (16 year-olds weighing 120 pounds or more can donate but must have parental consent) and all donors must have positive identification.
