The City of Sevierville Department of Parks and Recreation has temporarily closed the tennis courts and basketball courts at Sevierville City Park for repairs and renovation.
The work began on Monday and is estimated to require 60-90 days to complete.
The tennis court work will include new perimeter fencing and drainage, raising the court level 6-inches, installing a stone overlay and resurfacing.
The basketball courts will be changed into a multi-purpose court including resurfacing, new basketball goals and a futsal court, which is used to play a variation of traditional soccer on a hard surface with a specialized ball.
The City received a $70,000.00 Local Parks and Recreation Fund grant from the State of Tennessee for both projects. The United States Tennis Association is contributing $35,000.00 toward the tennis court project and the City and the Sevier County School Board will contribute 50 percent of the remaining cost.
Both Sevier County High School Tennis Bears and Seymour High School Tennis Eagles utilize the tennis courts, as well as eight county middle schools.
The City is also looking forward to working with the newly formed Tennis Association in the spring of 2012 to increase the tennis programs in Sevierville. The City plans to hire a part-time Tennis Coordinator next spring to help facilitate new programs and supervise the courts.
