CHRISTIANSBURGH, Va. – Four Tennessee divers were in action on day one of the 2011 Zone A USA Diving National Preliminary Meet and both Michael Wright and Tori Lamp earned qualifying spots for the upcoming AT&T National Diving Championships.
In the opening event, Wright finished runner-up in the 3-meter competition with a score of 386.60. He is now set to compete on both boards at the national meet after qualifying on the 1-meter at the USA Diving World Championship Trials.
Brent Sterling also made it to the 3-meter finals but came up just short, placing eighth with a tally of 352.80. Jordan Mauney finished 23rd in the prelims after accumulating a score of 267.15.
“Mike competed really, really well and overall had a steady day,” UT diving coach Dave Parrington said. “Brent also did a nice job on the 3-meter springboards but just came up a little short.”
The duo of Sterling and Mauney also claimed fifth in the 3-meter synchronized competition with a score of 288.18. The top three tandems in synchronized events move onto the national competition.
Lamp, whose redshirt freshman season was cut short due to injury, notched fifth on the 1-meter boards to secure a berth in the national meet. She finished with a score of 226.25, edging sixth place by .30 points.
“It was nice to see Tori get up there and compete today after her injury and earn a spot to advance,” Parrington said.
