Phoebe Wright came narrowly close to a world championship berth in the women’s 800 meters, and Evander Wells bowed out in the semifinal round of the men’s 200 Sunday, as the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships came to a close in Eugene, Ore.
A former Lady Vol NCAA indoor and outdoor champion in the 800, Wright made a push to make the U.S. squad for the upcoming IAAF World Championships, but she came up short by a slim margin in her bid for a top-three outcome.  Just 4/100ths of a second separated her from accomplishing her goal, as she placed fourth in 1:59.25, just behind the third-place effort of 1:59.21 from Alice Schmidt.
Wells, an ex-Vol who was fourth at last year’s NCAA Outdoor meet in the 200, ran in the USA semifinals on Sunday.  His 20.63 output left him third in heat two and 12th overall.
