Teams have been practicing for the 9th Annual Knoxville Dragon Boat Festival and will put their skills to the test on race day June 25.
The event, which starts at 8:30 a.m. and finishes around 3:30 p.m. at The Cove at Concord Park, will feature 50 teams racing for the title of Grand Champion. Winners win prizes, and paddlers raise pledges in advance for Knox Area Rescue Ministries, where hundreds in our community get help and a chance to change their lives. Anyone can donate online at www.knoxville.racedragonboats.com.
Dating back more than 2,300 years, Dragon Boat racing features teams of 20 paddlers, a drummer and steerer in authentic 46-foot long dragon boats. All ages, skill levels and physiques can participate, making it the ultimate team building sport, requiring synchronicity and finesse, more than power to win.
Teams dress up, decorate their tents and bring their team spirit. Event highlights include music, kid’s activities, cultural entertainment, food and fun.
The event is free to attend, and free parking and shuttling is available to and from Farragut Town Hall and the old Kroger parking lot on Kingston Pike from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. More festival details are online at www.racedragonboats.com.
