Maryville resident, Caroline Best, travelled to Pakistan to teach math for nursing students in Sahiwal, Pakistan. She will present a program, “Pakistan: A Land of Need,” sharing her impressions of the people, culture and social environment at the Blount County Public Library at 7 p.m. June 6.
Caroline Best traveled to Sahiwal, Pakistan to visit her sister, Nannette Howard, and do volunteer work for the month of February 2011. Her aunt, Nannette Enloe, Maryville College class of ’52, accompanied her.
Best taught math for nurses to the first and second year nursing students at the Christian Hospital and her aunt worked with the students on their English conversational skills.
Pakistan is not a place where many American tourists travel, but it proved to be a fascinating country with warm, loving people and interesting places to see. Best will share pictures and information about the places she visited in eastern Pakistan.
Best grew up in Cartersville, GA, and graduated from Maryville College in 1972, with a degree in mathematics. She taught middle school math before staying home to raise three children. She returned to full-time teaching in 1990 at Pellissippi State Community College.
She earned a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from UTK in 2006 and retired from Pellissippi in 2009. She enjoys traveling and volunteering. She has participated in mission trips to the Yucatan, Mexico and Belize with her church. She has also traveled to Russia and Wales as a result of visiting her sister who is a missionary with the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.
Free and open to the public, the program is at the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville.
