Maryville College Head Volleyball Coach and Athletics Director Kandis Schram will lead a squad of American volleyball standouts during a tour of Italy and Montenegro at the beginning on June.
Coach Schram just completed her 25th season of directing the Maryville College Scots volleyball program. She has led the volleyball program to seven NCAA National Tournament appearances, two WIAC Conference Championships, seven Great South Athletic Conference regular season titles, and eight GSAC Conference Tournament crowns. An alumnus of Maryville College in 1985, she has received many accolades as a coach and a player.
Over the past 24 years, she has been honored many times by her peers; receiving the South Region Tachikara Coach of the Year in 1989, and the Great South Conference Coach of the Year on eight occasions in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2009. She was inducted into the Maryville College Wall of Fame in October of 2006.
A trio of players who have excelled in MC’s orange and garnet will also be making the trip. Rising sophomore Kristen Sharp, an outside hitter from Hermitage, Tennessee will bolster the unit comprised of players from the NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA. Great South Athletic Conference Player of the Year Kristin Findley will also be joining the tour. This rising senior Scot paced MC and the league in kills (402) and kills per set (3.53). She also recorded 14 double-double performances averaging 3.32 digs per set in the fall of 2010. Finally, Maryville College Alumna Jesse Zabal will compete for the USA.
“I will be coaching a pair of teams during this summer’s tour,” stated Coach Schram. “The athletes will get an opportunity to train and compete on the international level as well as gain an international experience. Maryville College has a goal that 80% for their students have the opportunity to travel overseas to experience different cultures. This will be a great opportunity to fulfill this initiative and provide our players with an experience of a lifetime. I am personally honored to be selected to coach for Bring It USA and represent the United States.”
The four Scots and their teammates will depart for Rome, Italy on June 9th. They will train and be exposed to the local cultures of Rome and Bari and will travel to Montenegro for the 2011 Ok Galeb International Tournament. At the conclusion of the tournament the group will also tour Dubrovnik, Croatia before returning to the United States on June 20th.
